Foot Pain Q & A

What causes foot pain?

If you’re experiencing foot pain, you’ll likely need to see a podiatrist to identify which of the dozens of potential causes are leading to your pain. The most common culprits include plantar fasciitis, arthritis, diabetic neuropathy, ingrown toenails, and stress fractures.

How is foot pain diagnosed?

Podiatrists are experts in diagnosing and treating foot and ankle problems. They use personal and family medical history, physical examination, X-rays, or lab tests to diagnose the underlying condition.

The diagnostic tests your podiatrist orders will vary depending on the signs and symptoms you’re experiencing and their findings during a physical examination.

Is there anything I can do to alleviate foot pain at home?

You can alleviate foot pain that lasts a few days or less at home by resting your foot, applying ice three times a day for 20 minutes each time, and taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications.

If your foot lasts longer than a few days, schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to prevent further complications.

Why is treatment important?

Treatment is essential for several reasons:

  • Several foot disorders are progressive, which means they get worse over time without treatment
  • The way you walk — your gait — impacts the alignment of the rest of your body. Foot problems and misaligned gait can contribute to knee, hip, and back problems
  • The sooner you seek treatment, the less likely you are to require surgery

Can my primary care provider treat my foot pain?

Primary care providers will often treat foot pain caused by common, minor ailments like corns or calluses. However, most primary care providers will refer you to a foot doctor, or podiatrist, for complex or more severe problems like hammertoe, fractures, or plantar fasciitis.

Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist at Starrett Podiatry?

Starrett Podiatry doesn’t require you to have a referral, but your insurance company may have requirements. Talk to your insurance company’s member services department before scheduling an appointment to ensure you’ve met all requirements to receive maximum benefit.
